4th National Puppetry and Animatronics Summit

5 - 8 July, 2012, Melbourne

www.nationalpuppetrysummit.com

The Summit was a great success with a full program of speakers, workshops, clinics, discussions and performance. Delegates came from Australia, Asia and the USA.  Oscar winners Shaun Tan and Adam Elliot generously gave their time to talk about their creative process and share their artistic journeys.

The Sydney Puppet Theatre and ImaginArta - the Australian Puppet Centre were very involved.  Sue Wallace (from the Sydney Puppet Theatre and ImaginArta) was on the Steering Committee and Steve Coupe presented 2 workshops as a Puppet Doctor.

Albert with Tristan McKinnon

Marian Street Theatre for Young People's wonderful production of The Magic Pudding played to full houses during the July 2010 school holidays.  The Sydney Puppet Theatre created Albert, the Magic Pudding the only puppet in this production .  In his own words Albert was "the star of the show!" . Recently reviewed in Stage Whispers, David Spicer wrote

"The biggest challenge posed by bringing The Magic Pudding to the stage is what to do with the star of the show? Having a person play an inexhaustible bowl of pudding would be hard to swallow. In this regard the Marian Street Theatre for Young People production was a triumph. Albert - as the Magic Pudding is known - was a puppet, both beautifully crafted by the Sydney Puppet Theatre and superbly manipulated by his master pulling the strings, Tristan McKinnon. (photo) His expressions and movements were always amusing and apt. "  To read the full review click here.

As well as creating Albert, was very eventful.  We created new work for a show for National Parks and Wildlife, taught puppet building and performance at the Enmore Design Institute of TAFE, created puppet making workshops for children and consulted in puppetry at the Actors Centre, Sydney. This work was in addition to our performances in schools, libraries and other venues.

THE PUPPET CARAVAN, Feb/March 08  Early in 2008 we journeyed across the Nullabor on the Puppet Caravan with 7 other puppeteers (9 of us in all).  The Puppet Caravan created performances in some unusual places including Eucla in Western Australian (just over the border from South Australia).  Some people travelled over 300 kilometres to see a puppet show!  In Perth we performed  "Z for Giraffe"  at the UNIMA 2008 International Puppetry Congress and Festival.  The show got wonderful reviews and we really enjoyed playing to so many international delegates and Perth families.  The show was subsequently invited to perform at the 30th Anniversary of the Mistelbach Puppet Festival in Austria in October 08.  We were very pleased to be the Australian representative at the extraordinay festival which showcased 30 shows from 30 countries.

UNIMA is the international puppetry association and this festival and congress happens somewhere in the world every 4 years.  The next event will be in Tolosa, Spain 2016.

Puppet Pals Workshop

New Puppet Pals created in Grenfell.

In May 2014 we toured to western NSW, Condobolin and Grenfell, performing "The Emperor's New Beat Box" & "Oh Rats!" and doing a great Puppet Pals workshop.

Condobolin broke all records with a huge attendance. Nearly every child in the vast Lachlan shire was there - over 550 kids from a shire population of under 4,000!
